Fork It!
Privacy Policy — Last updated March 2026
Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains what information Fork It! collects, how it is used, and your choices regarding that information.
1. Information We Collect
Fork It! collects minimal information to provide its service:
- Location data — only if you grant permission. Used to find nearby restaurants. Never stored on our servers.
- Address input — if you type an address manually. Stored only in your browser's localStorage and never sent to our servers beyond the search request.
- Preferences — your radius, cuisine filters, and dark/light mode preference are saved in your browser's localStorage. We never see this data.
- Account information — if you create an account, we collect your username and a securely hashed version of your password. We never store your password in plain text.
- Saved favorites — if you save a restaurant, we store the restaurant name, address, category, and website (if available) in our database, linked to your account.
- Comments — if you submit feedback, we collect your name (optional) and message. This is stored in our database and visible only to the site administrator.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Account credentials are used solely to authenticate you and associate your saved favorites with your account.
- Saved favorites are used only to display your personal favorites list.
- We do not analyze, profile, or sell your data.
3. Information We Do Not Collect
- We do not use tracking cookies or advertising trackers.
- We do not collect your IP address beyond standard server logs.
- We do not collect your email address or any other personal identifier.
- We do not sell or share your data with third parties for any purpose.
4. Third-Party Services
Fork It! relies on third-party services to operate. When you search for restaurants, your approximate location is shared with our restaurant data provider. When you enter an address, it is sent to an address lookup service to convert it to coordinates. Our hosting provider may retain standard server infrastructure logs. Each third party's own privacy policy governs their handling of this data.
5. Cookies
Fork It! uses one strictly necessary cookie:
- Session cookie — set only when you log in to your account. It keeps you authenticated during your visit and expires when you log out or close your browser. This cookie does not track you and contains no personal information.
We do not use advertising cookies, analytics cookies, or any third-party tracking cookies. Because we only use a strictly necessary session cookie, no consent banner is required.
6. localStorage
We use your browser's localStorage to remember your preferences (address, radius, cuisine filters, and theme). This data stays on your device and is never transmitted to our servers. You can clear it at any time through your browser settings.
7. Data Retention
Account information and saved favorites are retained until you delete your account. Feedback comments are retained until deleted by the administrator.
8. Children's Privacy
Fork It! is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance of any changes.
